DEKRA in the DEKM
With High Voltage into the Future
Purely electric karting: After its premiere last year, the German Electric Kart Championship (DEKM) is already entering its second season. As the world’s first purely electric karting race series, it is consciously focusing on forward-looking technologies. And DEKRA is accompanying the innovative championship as a technical partner.
It is a classic win-win situation: The DEKM benefits from the expertise that DEKRA has built up over decades in other motorsports categories such as the DTM and the ADAC GT Masters. And with its involvement in the electric kart series, DEKRA sharpens its expertise in the field of electromobility. As the technical partner of the DEKM, DEKRA performs the tests on the high-volt system and also assumes its certification at DEKRA Certification in Arnheim.
In the DEKM, uniform chassis of the type Sodi Sigma DD2 are used, which are equipped with electric engines of Rotax. Thus, the approximately 150 kilogram-heavy karts accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of up to 130 km/h. Centralized use of the e-karts ensures equality of opportunity in the field, while strictly regulated test days and tire quotas provide for cost efficiency.
In 2019, the eleven registered drivers from seven nations will fight it out for total prize money of 38,500 € and a place in the training programs of Porsche Motorsport, which is reserved for the new overall DEKM winner.
This year, the electric series will again be held as part of the German Kart Championship (DKM) across a total of five race weekends in Germany and abroad. The series begins in Wackersdorf, Germany, in May and ends in Sarno, Italy, in October. And DEKRA will be involved as the hunt for Philipp Britz’s successor takes place. The young German won the DEKM’s premiere season by a tight margin in 2018. Thus, high levels of excitement are ensured in the electric series.
