In 2019, there will be even more of a focus on driving ability in the DTM than before. And each and every one of the 18 drivers of Audi, Aston Martin, and BMW will do everything to win the prestigious championship title. As an official DTM series partner, DEKRA will ensure the safety of the racing vehicles – so that the drivers and the fans can enjoy what the DTM has stood for decades: racing hearts.
One of DEKRA’s main tasks in the DTM is the technical approval of all the vehicles. Here, the DEKRA experts, under the leadership of Wolfgang Dammert and his eight-strong team, check whether the cars meet the strict specifications of the technical regulations in all respects. In this way, equality of opportunity is guaranteed and it is ensured that only flawlessly functioning vehicles are allowed to race, since protecting drivers, pit-lane crews, track marshals, officials, and spectators has the highest priority.
DEKRA has been at the DTM’s side as a partner since 1989 and has always followed the development of the most important German racing series up close and helped shape it in the interests of safety. On behalf of the German Motorsports Union (DMSB), DEKRA, as the official technical partner of the DTM, ensures compliance with the rules.
Here, the technical inspectors of the expert organization use a 3D precision measuring arm in order to carry out efficient analyses that are accurate up to 0.01 millimeters. Since 2018, DEKRA has even used augmented reality, thus again making use of trend-setting technologies to perfect its own processes.
The list of tasks is extensive. Each racing season, DEKRA carries out up to 180 basic inspections on the racing cars. In addition, the DEKRA experts place approximately 11,000 seals on engines and tires in the course of the season. But that is not all: The experts collect and inspect up to five terabytes of video material and gather a further 2.5 terabytes or so of data about the vehicles and their engines.
