Hülkenberg visits DEKRA at the Essen Motor Show
The Motorsport Athlete of the Year up close and personal: Nico Hülkenberg visited the DEKRA stand at the Essen Motor Show to look back on the 2015 Formula One season. He also revealed the greatest success of his career.
He was undoubtedly one of the most important guests at the 2015 Essen Motor Show. Nico Hülkenberg visited the DEKRA stand in Essen again this year. Together with hundreds of motorsport fans, he looked back on the highlights of the 2015 season. And those highlights were not restricted to Formula One this year, but also included success at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Race of Champions.
In Formula One, Nico Hülkenberg backed up his fine results from recent years, ending the season in tenth place in the Drivers’ World Championship. The man from Emmerich finished sixth on three occasions in the 2015 Formula One season. As such, it was only natural that he should have particularly fond memories of the race weekends in Austria, Japan and Brazil.
Hülkenberg: DEKRA has become like a family to me
His Force India team reached a very special milestone in 2015. A success that, as a team player, was particularly close to Nico Hülkenberg’s heart. The British/Indian team scored 136 points in the Constructors Championship, making it the most successful season in the history of the team.
“DEKRA are not only my sponsors, they have supported me since 2004 and played a major role in me making it into Formula One at all. DEKRA more than a sponsor – it has become like a family to me.”
In mid-June, the DEKRA-supported driver lined up at the wheel of a Porsche LMP1 in the prestigious endurance race – and won. “Victory in Le Mans was the greatest achievement of my career so far.” The first active Formula 1 driver to win the Le Mans 24 Hours in more than two decades, Nico Hulkenberg has received a Gregor Grant Award at the Autosport Awards. Hulk received the Autosport accolade from the last man to achieve the feat, 1991 Le Mans winner Johnny Herbert.
First visit to DEKRA in Essen as Motorsport Athlete of the Year
Thanks to his victory at the most important endurance race in the world, coupled with another impressive season in Formula One, Nico Hülkenberg travelled to the DEKRA stand at the Essen Motor Show as the ADAC Motorsport Athlete of the Year for the first time. Hülkenberg admitted during his visit to DEKRA that it was a very special honour to join the long list of people to have been named Motorsport Athlete of the Year. Among his predecessors are such motor racing greats as world rally champion Walter Röhrl, record Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, and record DTM champion Bernd Schneider.
His success earned Hülkenberg a place in the Race of Champions in the Olympic Stadium in London. Alongside four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, he reached the final of the Nations Cup, where he and his compatriot were eventually defeated by England. While Vettel is an old hand when it comes to the Race of Champions, winning the Nations Cup six times in a row with Michael Schumacher from 2007 to 2012, Hülkenberg made his debut this year. An impressive second place for Vettel and Hülkenberg made them the best-placed Formula One drivers among the 20 starters, who came from a variety of different motorsport series.
No sooner is one season over, than the next begins
Now that the 2015 season has drawn to a close, Nico Hülkenberg is looking forward to some time away from motorsport with his family. However, he is also looking forward to the 2016 season already. He has big plans – particularly in Formula One with the Force India team. The new season kicks off on 20th March 2016, when the first race of the season takes place in Melbourne, Australia. DEKRA will also be present. We are already looking forward to a successful twelfth season with you, Nico!
